Because of its many high-profile residents, movie stars, politicians, writers, and artists also band together with residents in fundraisers and benefits to raise awareness for the fragile ecosystem of the Vineyard and to support community organizations and services. The largest of these is the annual Possible Dreams Auction.[39] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martha%27s_Vineyard#cite_note-38)

Martha's Vineyard has also been or is home to a number of artists and musicians, including Evan Dando (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evan_Dando), Tim "Johnny Vegas" Burton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_%22Johnny_Vegas%22_Burton) of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mighty_Mighty_Bosstones), James Taylor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Taylor), Carly Simon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carly_Simon), Livingston Taylor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livingston_Taylor), Ben Taylor, Huey Taylor (musician/hotelier), Kate Taylor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kate_Taylor), Alex Taylor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Taylor_%28musician%29), Tom Rush (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Rush), Geoff Muldaur (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoff_Muldaur), Maria Muldaur (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Muldaur), Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Johnny_Hoy_and_the_Bluefish&action=edit&redlink=1), Willy Mason (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willy_Mason), Unbusted (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unbusted), Mike Nichols (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Nichols), Gordon Healy, Kahoots, Slim-Bob Berosh and Timo Elliott. Historian and author David McCullough (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_McCullough) is also an island resident, as are the young-adult books authors: Judy Blume (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judy_Blume) and Norman Bridwell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Bridwell). Late authors Shel Silverstein (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shel_Silverstein) and William Styron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Styron) also lived on the Vineyard, as did writer, journalist and teacher John Hersey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hersey), poet and novelist Dorothy West (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy_West) and artist Thomas Hart Benton. (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Thomas_Hart_Benton.&action=edit&redlink=1) Various writers have been inspired by the island—including the mystery writer Philip Craig (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Craig) who set several novels on the island. The Academy Award winning Patricia Neal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patricia_Neal) owned a home on Chappaquiddick, and James Cagney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Cagney), Lillian Hellman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lillian_Hellman) (who is buried in Able's Hill Cemetery near the site of Belushi's grave), and Katherine Cornell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katherine_Cornell) all found the Vineyard an exciting, rewarding place to live.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)] In addition the famous Life Magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Eisenstaedt) was a fifty-year summer resident of the Vineyard until his death in 1995. His most famous photograph is the kissing sailor in Times Square on V-J Day.

Other well-known celebrities who live on or have regularly visited the island: Famoulsy renowned Harlem Renaissance artist Lois Mailou Jones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lois_Mailou_Jones), U.S. President Barack Obama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama);[27] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martha%27s_Vineyard#cite_note-Obama-26) former president Bill Clinton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Clinton), Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillary_Clinton); comedian and talk show host David Letterman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Letterman); Bill Murray (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Murray); Tony Shalhoub (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Shalhoub); Quincy Jones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quincy_Jones); Ted Danson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Danson) and wife Mary Steenburgen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Steenburgen); Larry David (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_David); the Farrelly brothers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farrelly_brothers); Meg Ryan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meg_Ryan); Chelsea Handler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelsea_Handler); screenwriter Will Widger (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Screenwriter_Will_Widger&action=edit&redlink=1). Also, Mike Wallace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Wallace_%28journalist%29) of 60 Minutes is a summer resident of Martha's Vineyard. Late anchorman Walter Cronkite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Cronkite) was a prominent summer resident as well. Other regularly appearing celebrities include film writer/director Spike Lee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_Lee), attorney Alan Dershowitz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Dershowitz), comedians Dan Aykroyd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Aykroyd) and James Belushi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Belushi), politico Vernon Jordan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernon_Jordan), and television news reporters Diane Sawyer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Sawyer), former Ambassador and President of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_Museum_of_Art), William H. Luers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_H._Luers) and Charlayne Hunter-Gault (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlayne_Hunter-Gault). Despite popular perceptions of the Vineyard as "Hollywood East", the island is very low-key and quiet; celebrities go to the Vineyard to enjoy the atmosphere, and not to be seen. Locals tend to be protective of celebrity privacy, though recent coverage of celebrity sightings (most notably in the two local newspapers on the Island) has begun to erode that respect for privacy through more frequent reporting on celebrity sightings and famous visitors.[40] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martha%27s_Vineyard#cite_note-39) Vineyard social life often occurs in private, down country roads, and not in the small towns, only two of which even sell alcohol (Oak Bluffs and Edgartown).
